Weathering of calcareous bedrocks is strongly affected by the activity of soil microorganisms

Phosphorus (P) availability in calcareous forest soils is commonly low compared to siliceous soils. The main reason for this that phosphate ions tend precipitate with calcium (Ca). Weathering of rocks and the potential microorganisms dissolve parent material not fully understood. Therefore, we examined microbial carbonate dissolution abundance phosphorus-solubilizing bacteria temperate contrasting materials. We incubated soil extracts weathered materials (i.e., dolomite limestone) from two differing P content determined rates Ca solubilization. In addition, (PSB). found net solubilization rate ranged 8.8 511.1 nmol m−2 d−1 across both depths. Calcium were negatively related pH positively concentration organic acids. gross on average 63.6% higher (P-poor soil) than limestone (P-rich soil).
